The book selection subcommittee for the UM Common Reading Experience has recently chosen six finalists for the 2012 book nomination. The final selection is expected to be announced by early March. The six finalists for this year’s reading selection are:
Book Nominations Now Accepted For 2013 UM Common Reading Experience
Faculty, staff and students are now able to suggest a book for the 2012 UM Common Reading Experience.
“The purposes of the Common Reading Experience support the goals of our university: building community around academic inquiry, introducing students to the ways in which different disciplines approach problems, broadening perspectives, and increasing awareness of the unresolved conflicts and history that make up our culture,” said Robert Cummings, director of the Center for Writing and Rhetoric.
This is the second year that the university will participate in a campus-wide reading program. The first Common Reading Experience was very successful. The campus read “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by award-winning author Rebecca Skloot, who spoke on campus at Freshman Convocation in August. [Read more…]

2011 Common Reading Essay Contest
The Center for Writing & Rhetoric along with the University Libraries, Division of Outreach, Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction and Writing Centers are promoting an essay contest for students based on this year’s Common Reading Experience book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Prizes will be given to a winner from each category: UM – Oxford, UM – DeSoto, UM – Tupelo, UM – Grenada, UM – Booneville, UMMC (Jackson), and Lafayette County High School and Oxford High School. Graduate Women’s Reading Group – Sept. 16
Friday, September 16, 2011 5:00 p.m. – Graduate Women’s Reading Group. Our first book for the semester will be Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, this year’s Common Reading Experience book. We will discuss various themes from the book as well has how to teach the book across disciplines. Refreshments provided. All graduate women are encouraged to attend.
